The real cost of a cheap website for an SME

A cheap website looks economical, until you add up what it truly costs: wasted time, no visibility, premature rebuild, compliance risks. Here's why a professional website is an investment, not an expense.

The real cost of a cheap website for an SME

You get a quote from an agency, and the first thought that comes to mind is often the same: "I can find a website for far less elsewhere." And that's true. There are websites for a few dozen euros a month, ready-made themes, and now tools that produce one for you in a few minutes. The catch is that the price you see is only the tip of the iceberg. The real cost comes later. And it usually hurts a lot more.

The time you no longer spend with your clients

A website you build yourself is never really free. You pay for it in hours. The time to choose a template, wrestle with the layout, write the copy, work out why the contact form doesn't work, then start over. All those hours are hours you don't spend with your clients, or on your real job. When your day has a billable value, this is probably the heaviest cost of all. And it's also the most invisible one, because it never shows up on any invoice.

A website no one finds brings you nothing

A cheap website is almost always an invisible one. No structure designed for search, no performance, no proper content: it appears nowhere when people look for what you offer. Not on Google, and not in the answers from AI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity, which your future clients increasingly turn to. You have a website, but it isn't working for you. It's a beautiful shopfront on a street where no one walks: it exists, but it brings you no one. Ultimately, the real question isn't "how much does this website cost", but "how many clients does it bring me". And at zero visitors, even a few euros a month is already too much.

Slowness and mobile drive your visitors away

Generic templates and low-cost platforms are often heavy, slow, and poorly suited to phones. The trouble is that most of your visitors discover you precisely from their mobile. And every extra second of loading means people who close the tab before they've even seen what you do. You may pay little for your website, but you pay dearly in clients who leave without giving you a chance.

Compliance is not an option

Legal notices, privacy policy, cookie management, GDPR: in Luxembourg, a professional website has to meet a precise legal framework. Quick solutions almost always miss it, and you're the one left exposed. Getting compliant after the fact takes time, sometimes money, and always a bit of stress. Not to mention the legal risk, which is very real.

The rebuild you'll pay for in eighteen months

This is the story that comes up most often. The cheap website holds up for a while, then it shows its limits. Impossible to develop, stuck on a platform whose prices keep climbing, unable to keep up as the business grows. A year and a half later, everything has to be redone. And rebuilding a website costs more than doing a good one from the start. The result: you've paid twice. Once for the disposable website, once for the one you should have built from the beginning.

A website isn't an expense, it's an investment

The right question to ask isn't "how much does it cost", it's "how much does it bring me, and how much does it protect me". A well-designed website brings you clients continuously, it builds trust, it sets you apart from your competitors, it lasts over time and it covers you legally. When you look at what it generates over several years, its real cost per client won is often far lower than that of a "cheap" website that converts no one.
